Maintain high academic standards – NAVASCO students urged
Navrongo (U/E), Feb. 01, GNA – The Navrongo Senior High School (NAVASCO), has marked its 16th homecoming dubbed “Nabia Homecoming,” with a call on students to maintain the high academic standards and discipline set by their predecessors.
Some of the old students are the Member of Parliament for the Bawku West Constituency, Mr Cletus Avoka, Mr John Ndebugre, a Legal Practitioner, Professor Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of the Open University in the Upper East Region, Mr Williams Amuna, the Chief Executive for GRIDCO and Colonnel Dr Emmanuel Kotia of the Military.
The school also produced important personalities such as Dr Kwabena Donkor, the former Minister of Energy, Dr Gyesika Agambila, a former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr Elias Sory, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Mr Clement Bugase, a former District Chief Executive for the Kassena-Nankana District, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South and the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations among others.
The Chief Executive of GRIDCO, Mr Williams Amuna, said past students made distinctions through hard work and determination amidst difficult conditions.
“During our days we never had the educational amenities and the conducive atmosphere you have today. Now you have them through our support. All you need now is hard work and determination to enable you make it once. You must nature in yourselves the “can do it myself spirit”, he admonished the students.
The students were also encouraged to imbibe a sense of integrity, honesty, submissiveness, humbleness and patriotism so as to enable them become more responsible, devoid of corruption and other social vices.
The National President of Nabia, Mr Mohammed Haroon, mentioned the rehabilitation of the water supply system on the campus, assorted items including books, desktops and laptop computers, tables and chairs donated by the London branch of the group as some of the support to the school,
“Nabia also facilitated the re-roofing of most of the classrooms and dormitories that were ripped off by the 2012 rain storm including the donation of a brand new pick up by four prominent Nabia of the 1974 group namely Nabia Professor Miller, Nabia Dr Sory, Nabia Dr Amankwa , Nabia Dr Katuna and Nabia Morna”, the National President stated.
The Headmistress of the School, Mrs Franciscka Yizura, who mentioned some of the achievements chalked by the school as being the best Senior High School in general academic performance, best performing Senior High in Mathematics as well as producing the best candidate in Agriculture in 2012.
She enumerated some of the challenges facing the school as inadequate classrooms, inadequate kitchen staff as a result of the ban on employment and the dilapidated dinning and the assembly halls and staff bungalows.
